Sewing Her Dreams into Reality

S. Shamshad joined the 5th Batch Tailoring Training Program with hesitation and uncertainty about whether she would be able to learn tailoring skills successfully. Initially lacking confidence, she was provided with continuous counselling and encouragement by the team at Cheshire Disability Trust to help her attend classes regularly and participate actively in the training. Gradually, with constant support and motivation, Shamshad became more confident and committed to learning.

Despite her locomotor disability and the challenges of daily travel, Shamshad has shown exceptional dedication toward building her skills. She travels nearly 30 kilometres every day to attend the training sessions, reflecting her strong determination to become financially

independent. Her commitment and consistency have helped her make steady progress throughout the course.

Shamshad began her training by learning basic tailoring techniques such as hemming, fabric matching, pattern paper cutting, and practicing different types of stitches. As her confidence grew, she advanced to more practical tailoring work including stitching sari petticoats, altering old clothes, basic paper cutting, zigzag stitching, and frock stitching. During the training program, she also gained hands-on experience in cutting and stitching shimmies, dress tops, gowns, blouses, churidar sets, and sari petticoats, along with dress alteration and bag stitching.

She actively participates in practical sessions and demonstrates great enthusiasm for learning. Her sincere interest, discipline, and eagerness to improve reflect her determination to create a sustainable livelihood for herself and contribute meaningfully to her family.

An important factor in Shamshad’s progress has been the continuous support from her family. Her mother encourages her to practice regularly at home and helps her improve her stitching techniques. This emotional support and encouragement have played a major role in motivating Shamshad to continue her training with confidence and consistency.

She hopes to start tailoring work from home, generate a stable income, and improve her family’s financial condition. More importantly, she wishes to achieve self-confidence, independence, and greater social recognition within her community
