Disability Awareness Session for Herman Miller

Volunteers from Herman Miller took part in a Visual & Orthopedic Disability Awareness Session at Cheshire Disability Trust and their office campus this October. Starting with an introduction and overview of the activities conducted at CDT, the intention of the session was to give the volunteers a small taste of what a visually disabled and orthopedically challenged individual goes through on a daily basis.

Disability Awareness Session Heartfulness

Occasionally the team at CDT will work with other NGO’s and Charitable Organizations to help spread awareness. These sessions run by the team at Cheshire Disability Trust go a long way in building empathy, inclusivity and awareness about the needs of People with Disabilities.

The sessions span a couple of hours and cover simulations of Orthopedic disability and Visual impairment. The team achieves this by putting participants through the daily motions of a PWDs life albeit with props that allow able-bodied individuals to experience situations that are difficult to navigate with a disability.

Disability Awareness Session for Goldman Sachs

Volunteers from Goldman Sachs took part in a Disability Awareness Session conducted by CDT at their Bangalore campus. Run as part of their ‘Summer Service Fest’, CDT held a ‘Drop-In Volunteering’ event. The intention of the session was to give the volunteers a small taste of what visually disabled, orthopedically challenged and hearing impaired individuals go through on a daily basis.

Sign Language Awareness Session

Designed to teach employees, their friends and family sign language, the session run by CDT for the employees of Royal Bank of Scotland went a long way in building empathy, inclusivity and awareness about the needs of the deaf and hearing impaired.

The sessions spanned a couple of hours and covered a wide range of activities designed to put the participants through the daily motions of a PWDs life albeit with props that allowed able-bodied individuals to experience situations that are difficult to navigate with hearing impairment.

Disability Awareness Session for RBS

CDT team conducted a Disability Awareness Session at Royal Bank of Scotland during an employee felicitation ceremony. Post an introduction to CDT and the work done by the organization, the employees were taken through the various challenges PWDs face at work. Eighty new employees were also taken through a sign language awareness session.

Kashmir to Kanyakumari (K2K) Walkathon

The K2K Walkathon was one of the most impactful events organized by CDT. Held in Cheshire Home’s Bangalore campus, the event marked the final leg of the Kashmir to Kanyakumari Road Expedition and was held in partnership with the American Indian Foundation (AIF) Thums Up, Being Human and more.

The brainchild of Boniface Prabhu, Padma Shri awardee, India’s #1 ranked wheelchair tennis player and the country’s first-ever Para World-Championship medal winner, the Veer campaign aimed to promote and spread the use of sign language in India, understand the goals and dreams of the differently-abled and motivate & inspire them to achieve their inner potential. With over 60 participants from CDT along with Boniface Prabhu himself, the event was a resounding success.

Sign Language at Schools & Colleges

A one week campaign with 2000+ school students as participants, CDT celebrated International Sign-Language Day (23rd September) and World Deaf Day (30th Sept) with great vigour. According to the National Association of the Deaf, roughly two percent of the country suffers with Hearing Disabilities. Highlighting the fact that Sign-Language is the only language the deaf speak and that most of us do not understand it, CDT organized this event to spread awareness among school children aged 13 to 16.

On the 23rd, 24th and 25th of September 2018, students of Brigade foundation attended the sessions organized by CDT. On 26th September, the session was conducted for students of Stonehill International School, Yelahanka. On 30th September, 40 kindergarten students of Redbridge international school attended the session. The volunteers spoke about the challenges faced by hearing-impaired people, the school students were encouraged to learn American Sign Language and basic words.

Cheshire Disability Trust Agents of Change

With a turnout of more than 1000 people, 300 of which were PwDs, Agent of Change, held on 17th December 2017 at Cubbon Park, still remains one of the most successful campaigns in CDTs history. Sponsored by companies like Right Source Global, Robert Bosch, Shangri La and several others, the event was held to create awareness on disabilities and the challenges faced by PwDs. Among the participants were the employees from over 160 companies, students from schools and colleges, and senior citizens. The campaign was widely covered by the mainstream media and achieved its goal of raising awareness for the disabled and the need for creating inclusive spaces for PWDs. The Mayor of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) at the time, Shri Sampath Raj was the chief guest among other dignitaries such as International Kickboxing Champion Girish R Gowda and activist turned entrepreneur Joyappa Achaiah.

The highlight of the campaign was undoubtedly the option for participants to learn Sign-Language while they walked or ran, from the placards held by volunteers. A fruitful engagement that it was, the participants learned a few words which they demonstrated at the end of the run. A ‘Disability Experience Zone’ was yet another attraction that helped participants experience the challenges faced by a visually impaired person. Designed to help an able-bodied individual understand and empathize with vision impairment, the participants were made to walk 100 meters with blindfolds on. The stalls on the way exhibited assistive devices used by PwDs which were also detailedly explained to the participants.
